On Monday morning we said our goodbyes and drove the rough road back to the highway to head to Exmouth. It took us 1/2 and hour to drive the short 10 kilometres and it felt so good when we hit the smooth, black stuff. The closer we got to Exmouth the darker the skies became. It had obviously been raining heavily in the town before our arrival as many of the streets had water over them, and a lot of the floodways were exactly that ... floodways. We checked into the Lighthouse Caravan Park (about 17kms out of town) just as the rain started. We were advised that we wouldn't be able to drink the water connected to the sites as it was from the nearby sand dunes and very salty ... only OK to shower and wash up in. By dinner time the rain had eased enough for us to walk to the park cafe for dinner, and there we heard that during the afternoon we had received 123mm or nearly 5 inches of rain! We had power here but no mobile phone or internet. Once again, we had to drive up a hill to the lighthouse behind the park to make calls and get our emails.
Tuesday was sunny after all the rain, so we managed to hang out two
loads of washing and get them dry. In the afternoon we drove into
Exmouth and had a look around at the Marina area where there is a huge
housing development going ahead. Exmouth is very much a Naval/Air Force
town and there were Australian Federal Police doing the rounds
everywhere. We also drove north of Exmouth to have a look at the wreck
of the cattleship SS Mildura which ran aground in 1907.
